The No S Diet hasn't seen as much media attention as other diets, but its ease of adherence has allowed many people to stick to this diet when other diets fail them. Instead of obsessively counting calories or eating only certain types of foods, the No S Diet takes a simpler approach to dieting, which many people find refreshing after trying other diets and always having to keep many esoteric random-seeming rules in their heads. According to the FDA, 95% of dieters end up failing to stick to their diets, with most dieters only lasting two or three months before reverting to past eating habits. It's important to find a diet that you can actually stick to; a diet doesn't do any good if you don't put it into practice.
There are three simple rules to keep in mind on the No S Diet, all of which follow from its name: no snacks, no sweets, and no seconds. Not eating snacks helps you avoid mindlessly consuming calories; most snacks are usually either full of simple sugars or fat and are not healthy for you anyway. Snacking is the bane of many dieters, who can end up undoing a week's worth of diligent dieting by binge eating snacks.
For the purpose of the diet, sweets refer to any food whose main source of calories is refined sugar. Adding small amounts of sugar to foods is fine, as is eating fruits and drinking fruit juice. Since the source of calories in non-diet soda is sugar, they are prohibited in the diet.
The no seconds rule is about portion control and to prevent you from mindlessly over-stuffing yourself with food. Eating less food obviously means you are eating less calories, and will lose more weight as a result.
Exceptions to the rules above can be made on days that start with S (that is, the weekend) and on holidays or birthdays. You should still be sensible about what you eat, however. Eating whole chocolate cakes every weekend is not going to help you lose weight. Learn to enjoy sweets as a special treat rather than craving them as part of your daily routine. The built-in cheat days may seem strange, but they help you cope with the changes to your diet.
The No S Diet is a diet that helps you learn healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. There's no special science behind the diet, only common sense information. However, many people have lost large amounts of weight on the diet. How did they do it? They retrain their eating habits so that they are drawn to eat smaller amounts of food, and don't eat sweets as often - which are only empty calories mostly devoid of vitamins and minerals but which have a big effect on your waistline. By learning healthier, more rational eating habits that are easy to remember while still maintaining the possibility of cheat days, many people have found that they can easily stick to the diet.
